About the Artist

Joseph Marafioti (Starlume) is an Australian drummer, multi-instrumentalist, and electronic music producer based in Adelaide.

He creates groove-driven progressive electronica built on live drums and bass, layered with retro-futurist analogue synthesis, blending the feel of live performance with the depth of electronic production.

Starlume is the music project of Joseph Marafioti.

About Joseph Marafioti

Joseph Marafioti began as a drummer, developing a deep connection to rhythm, dynamics, and feel — foundations that continue to shape his music today. Over time, that evolved into a broader exploration of sound, composition, and production, moving beyond performance as an Adelaide-based musician, into creating complete musical worlds.

His approach is grounded in curiosity rather than formula. Learning by doing, experimenting with whatever tools were available, and pushing ideas until they became something real. From early analogue setups and hardware limitations to modern digital workflows, that mindset has remained the same — adapt, explore, and create.

Outside of his solo work, Joseph Marafioti has performed live across multiple projects, including tribute performances and national touring, sharing the stage with established artists and delivering complex, high-energy live shows.

Starlume (Music Project)

Starlume is where those experiences converge.

The project blends progressive rock influence with electronic production, combining live instrumentation with layered synthesis. Built on real drums and bass, the music carries a human feel, while analogue-inspired textures and sequencing create a cinematic, evolving sound.

Influenced by artists such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Gary Numan, Pink Floyd, Daft Punk, and Giorgio Moroder, Starlume explores the space between nostalgia and forward movement — where analogue warmth meets modern production.

The focus is not just on sound, but on atmosphere, progression, and storytelling through music. Each track is less about fitting a genre and more about capturing a moment, a feeling, or an idea as it unfolds.

Tour with Kelly Garni from Quiet Riot

In December 2025, I toured Australia’s east coast performing the early works of Quiet Riot alongside original bassist Kelly Garni, paying tribute to the legendary Randy Rhoads.

The tour marked Kelly’s first time bringing these tribute shows to Australia, assembling a lineup of established local musicians to perform material from Quiet Riot’s first two albums across Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, and Coolangatta.

This was the beginning - 1996

Everything was analogue. Recording meant working with a 4-track, not a DAW. Plugins didn’t exist, sounds came from real synthesisers, and timing came from a metronome, not a grid.

It was a time of experimenting with whatever I had, learning through limitation, and finding ways to make things work.

No shortcuts, just persistence.

Joseph Marafioti continues to write, record, and release music under the Starlume project.
